Why Getting Sciatica Pain in Pregnancy Is NOT Normal!

Pain during pregnancy is often seen as part of the journey. While it can be uncomfortable (or downright frustrating!), many mums accept it as a small sacrifice for the incredible reward at the end of their third trimester.

But what if we told you that it doesn’t have to be this way?

Nerve pain during pregnancy is not normal, and sciatica pain certainly doesn’t have to be part of your daily life. In fact, pain is your body’s way of signaling that something is wrong. Instead of suffering through it, let’s explore common types of pain mums experience and how chiropractic care can help relieve discomfort naturally and effectively.

Pain in the Sacroiliac Joint

This joint connects the spine and pelvis, allowing your legs to move forward and back. During pregnancy, extra weight shifts the body’s center of gravity forward, placing additional stress on this joint.

Your baby sits and attaches to the front of the sacrum (tailbone). As the tailbone moves forward, it creates tension where it connects to the hip, leading to discomfort. Keeping the sacroiliac joint strong and stable is crucial for a comfortable pregnancy. Chiropractic care can help by activating the receptors and nerves responsible for balance and movement.

We use various gentle techniques, such as pelvic blocks and impulse adjustments, to restore proper function. By activating the right receptors, we help your body avoid old movement patterns that contribute to pain.

Sciatica: The Nagging Pain Down the Leg

Sciatica pain is one of the most common complaints we hear from pregnant mums. This sharp, shooting pain down the leg is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down through the legs.

Sciatica tends to worsen in pregnancy because the growing baby shifts weight forward, tilting the hips and increasing pressure on the spine. As the fetal sac pulls on the ligaments in the front of the spine, it creates tension and nerve compression.

The good news? This pain isn’t something you have to endure! Chiropractic care can help stabilize the spine and relieve nerve pressure, stopping the pain from returning. Our goal is to localize the pain back into the pelvis and ultimately eliminate it.

Cramps: Your Body's Warning Signal

Cramps may seem harmless, but they’re actually an indication that something isn’t quite right. They signal a lack of energy, an imbalance in body chemistry, or poor nerve communication.

To combat cramps, we recommend:

✔️ Ensuring proper nutrient levels – Potassium and magnesium deficiencies can lead to muscle cramps. We offer high-quality liquid magnesium that’s safe and easy to take during pregnancy.

✔️ Chiropractic adjustments – By balancing the pelvis and optimizing nerve function, we enhance communication between the brain and muscles, promoting proper relaxation and movement.

The result? Better sleep, improved recovery, and a more comfortable pregnancy.

Disc Issues: Extra Pressure, Extra Pain

If you have a history of disc injuries or scar tissue, pregnancy can put additional strain on your spine. Your growing belly shifts your posture, forcing your discs (the spine’s shock absorbers) to work harder than usual.

We use safe, gentle strategies to relieve pressure on the discs and help them function properly. One effective method is teaching proper walking posture to reduce unnecessary strain. Because discs don’t have blood vessels, they rely on movement to restore fluid and heal, which is why proper spinal alignment is crucial.

The Role of Nutrition: Reducing Inflammation

Your body is only as good as the fuel you put into it. Poor nutrition can lead to inflammation, toxin buildup, and chemical imbalances, all of which can worsen pain and discomfort during pregnancy.

Avoiding inflammatory foods like sugars, alcohol, and processed foods can significantly improve your body’s ability to heal and function optimally. Supporting your immune system with nutrient-dense foods will also benefit both you and your baby.

Getting Adjusted

Pregnant mums can receive safe, gentle adjustments on specialized tables designed for comfort. Our tables allow space for your growing belly, so you can fully relax during treatment.

We use gentle techniques such as pelvic blocks, soft adjustments, and stretches to relieve pain and keep your body functioning optimally. Plus, we offer natural supplements to support your body’s increased demands during pregnancy.

Importantly, we do NOT perform X-rays on pregnant mums. Instead, we use digital postural analysis to monitor changes in your body and tailor our care accordingly.

You Deserve a Comfortable Pregnancy

Our goal is to provide safe, natural, and effective care to help mums enjoy a pain-free pregnancy. If you or someone you know is struggling with discomfort, don’t hesitate to reach out.

We’d love to help you feel your best throughout this incredible journey! 💕
